Garden buying guide

How to choose a raised garden bed that fits your space.

A little measuring and planning can save money, soil, and a season of frustration. Start with the garden you have, then choose a bed that makes growing easier.

1. Measure the whole working area

Measure the footprint available for the bed, then leave room to walk, water and harvest. A bed placed against a fence needs less access space on one side; a bed in the middle of a yard should be reachable from all sides. Keep doors, gates, hoses and wheelbarrow paths in mind.

Start with comfortable reach: about four feet wide with access from both sides, or roughly two feet against a wall, can be useful planning examples. Your own reach should decide the width; you should be able to reach the center without stepping into the soil. University of Minnesota Extension explains reach-based bed sizing.

2. Match depth to what you will grow

Match root room to the crop and the ground beneath the bed. In an open-bottom bed over workable soil, roots can extend below the frame. On concrete or another hard surface, roots depend on the growing medium inside the bed, and moisture needs closer attention. University of Maryland Extension discusses these differences. For a deck or balcony, choose a bed designed to contain the growing medium with suitable drainage, and verify the structure can carry the filled bed, wet soil and people. An open-bottom ground bed is not automatically suitable for a raised deck.

3. Compare materials and upkeep

Untreated wood is easy to cut and repair, though it will weather and eventually need replacement. Metal beds are often durable and simple to assemble, but inspect edge finishing, coating, fasteners and the maker’s guidance for your climate. Composite and plastic options vary in rigidity, UV resistance and repairability. Ask what replacement parts are available before buying a complex kit.

4. Count the full cost, including fill

A large bed can be a strong value per square foot while still costing much more to fill. Estimate volume before you order soil or compost: length × width × depth, using the inside dimensions. A modular kit may also require extra connectors or tools. Include delivery charges, any coupon restrictions and the cost of the growing medium in your comparison.

For a quick estimate, use the calculator below. Enter the bed’s inside measurements, the depth you plan to fill, and the actual bag size. Bag pricing is optional; when entered, it estimates bag cost only. Allow separately for settlement, delivery and tax. Irregular shapes or obstructions can change the amount. This is a simple rectangular volume estimate, not a soil recipe or a recommendation for how deep every crop should be planted.

The bag count rounds up to a whole bag. Actual fill can vary with bed shape, settling, compaction and how full you plan to fill it. Check the bag volume and current price on the package or retailer page.

5. Understand the offer mechanics

“Buy one, get a second discount” is different from a single-item markdown. Check which products qualify, whether the discount applies automatically in the cart, and whether color or size changes the price. Treat a retailer’s crossed-out price as its own reference, not a proven historical low. Confirm stock and delivery to your address before relying on an offer.

6. Choose a layout you can maintain

Think about sunlight, watering access, crop rotation and how you move around the bed. More small beds can separate crops and paths; one larger bed may use space efficiently. A bed with a trellis can support climbing crops but needs overhead clearance and a sturdy orientation relative to wind.

Soil-buying questions before you order

How many bags fill a 4 × 8 raised bed?

If the inside measurements are 4 feet by 8 feet and you plan a 12-inch fill depth, the rectangular estimate is 32 cubic feet, or about 1.19 cubic yards. That is 16 bags when each bag contains 2 cubic feet. Outside dimensions, a shallower fill, an intermediate floor, and soil settling can change the amount. Enter your own measurements in the calculator above.

Should I compare bags with a bulk delivery?

Compare equivalent growing materials and their complete delivered totals. For bags, divide the price per bag by its cubic-foot volume, then use the rounded bag count. For a bulk quote priced per cubic yard, divide that unit price by 27 to compare the material cost per cubic foot. Add delivery, minimum-order charges, tax and any pickup costs separately. A low unit price may cost more overall when the delivery minimum exceeds what your bed needs.

Check what the quote actually contains: topsoil, compost and potting mix are different products. Ask about the material and its suitability for your planting plan before treating two quotes as interchangeable. The calculator estimates quantity and bag cost; it does not choose a soil recipe.

Is the bed wall height the same as the fill depth?

Use the depth of growing medium you actually plan to add, rather than automatically entering the full wall height. An intermediate floor or a contained base changes usable volume. An open-bottom bed over workable ground also gives roots access below the frame. Follow the bed maker's setup guidance and plan root room for your crops; leave any required headspace.
